Why does my windshield keep fogging up, and how do I clear it fast?

Not urgentUpdated 7 sources4 min read

Short answer

Fog on the inside of the windshield is moisture from warm, humid cabin air condensing on cold glass; clear it fastest by pressing the defrost button, keeping the A/C on (it dries the air, even in winter) and switching from recirculate to fresh outside air. If the glass fogs again and again, look for extra moisture or a problem: wet carpets, a leaking door or window seal, a clogged cabin air filter, or a greasy film with a sweet smell, which points to a leaking heater core.

Safety first. Don't drive until you can see clearly through the windshield; pull over somewhere safe if it fogs up while you're moving. Wiping with your hand or a cloth is a stopgap that leaves streaks, which glare in sunlight and oncoming headlights. If the fog leaves a greasy film and the car smells sweet inside, have the heater core checked soon: that's leaking coolant, and you shouldn't be breathing it.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Press the defrost button

Defrost mode sends air to the windshield and, on most cars, turns on the A/C and a higher fan speed by itself. Hyundai's 2025 Tucson manual says pressing defrost turns on the A/C as needed and selects fresh outside air automatically; if yours doesn't, set them by hand.

  2. 2

Keep the A/C on, even in winter

The A/C dries the air before it reaches the glass. Consumer Reports says to leave it on in winter and set whatever temperature is comfortable; you'll still get warm, dry air.

  3. 3

    Switch off recirculation

Turn off the button with the car and curved arrow so the system pulls in drier outside air. Consumer Reports says recirculation makes fogging worse, because it keeps cycling the same damp cabin air.

  4. 4

    Turn the heat up

Warm air holds more moisture and warms the glass. AAA's advice for winter fog is full heat aimed at the glass. Once you can see, turn the fan down.

  5. 5

    Crack a window

With several people in the car, opening the windows slightly may be all you need, according to Consumer Reports. It lets humid air out.

  6. 6

Use the rear defroster for the back glass

The rear window has its own defroster button (a rectangle with wavy arrows) that heats the lines in the glass. Turn it off once the glass is clear.

Why it fogs

Fog is condensation. Air can only hold so much water vapor, and the colder it gets, the less it holds. When warm, damp air inside the car touches glass that’s colder than its dew point, the extra moisture turns into tiny droplets on the glass. AAA puts it simply: windows fog whenever their temperature is very different from the air around them.

Where the fog sits tells you which side is the warm, wet one:

Where the fog is When it happens What’s going on How to clear it
Inside the glass Cold or rainy weather Warm, humid cabin air (breath, wet coats, snow on the floor) hits cold glass Defrost, A/C on, fresh air, heat up
Outside the glass Hot, humid weather with the A/C running Humid outside air hits glass chilled by the A/C Wipers; turn the A/C a little warmer (AAA)

If a wipe of the wipers clears it, the fog was on the outside.

The fastest way to clear inside fog

  1. Defrost button on. On most cars this also turns on the A/C, picks fresh air and bumps up the fan (it does on Hyundai’s 2025 Tucson). If yours doesn’t, set those yourself.
  2. A/C on. It dries the air. Consumer Reports and Jalopnik both say to use it in winter too.
  3. Recirculation off. Consumer Reports says recirculating cabin air makes fog worse; fresh outside air in winter is drier.
  4. Heat up, aimed at the glass. AAA recommends full heat directed at the windows.
  5. Crack the windows if you have passengers (Consumer Reports).
  6. Turn the fan down once you can see.

Skip wiping it with your sleeve. Consumer Reports warns that rubbing the glass leaves streaks that glare in sunlight and in oncoming headlights.

When it keeps coming back

Ordinary fog clears in a few minutes once the system is set right and stays away once the cabin warms up. If yours keeps returning, something is adding moisture or holding back the airflow:

  • Wet carpets or floor mats. Snow and water from boots and umbrellas evaporate into the cabin (Jalopnik). Pull the mats and dry them out; feel the carpet underneath, especially in the footwells.
  • Water getting in. Jalopnik notes that older cars with worn rubber door and window seals aren’t as watertight. A wet carpet on a dry day, or water in the trunk, points to a leak.
  • A clogged cabin air filter. AAA lists windows that fog up easily and are hard to defrost, along with weak airflow from the vents, as signs the cabin air filter is restricted. Factory intervals run 15,000 to 30,000 miles; your owner’s manual has yours.
  • A/C that isn’t working. If the A/C doesn’t run, the system can’t dry the air, and fog lingers even with the heat on. That’s worth a shop visit before winter.
  • A greasy film and a sweet smell. That’s the classic sign of a leaking heater core: coolant escapes behind the dashboard as a mist and coats the inside of the glass. A damp passenger-side carpet and weak heat often come with it. See why your car smells sweet and why the heater blows cold. Fog alone doesn’t prove it, because ordinary condensation causes fog too.

Keeping it from fogging

  • Clean the inside of the glass. AAA recommends an ammonia-free glass cleaner (ammonia can damage window tint) and a microfiber cloth, then an anti-fog product if your windows fog often.
  • Keep the cabin dry. Knock off snow before you get in, dry wet mats, and Jalopnik suggests a few silica gel packets on the dash and under the seats.
  • Start every winter drive on fresh air with the A/C on, not recirculate.
  • Replace the cabin air filter on schedule.

Frost or ice on the outside is a different job

Frost and ice on the outside of the glass need heat, not just dry air. Hyundai’s 2025 Tucson manual says to set the fan to its highest speed and the temperature to the hottest setting, then press defrost. Scrape what you can with a plastic scraper while it warms up, clear the whole windshield and all the windows before you drive. On a cold morning, a car that won’t start at all is a separate problem: see why a car won’t start in cold weather.

Common follow-up questions

Why does my windshield fog up on the inside?

Warm, humid air inside the car hits glass that's colder than the dew point, and the moisture condenses on it, the same way a cold drink sweats. AAA says it happens whenever the glass and the air around it are very different temperatures. In winter the moisture comes from your breath, wet coats and boots, and snow melting into the carpet.

Should I use hot or cold air to defog my windshield?

For fog on the inside in cold weather, use heat with the A/C on and fresh air, not recirculate (Consumer Reports, AAA). The A/C removes moisture and the heat warms the glass. For fog on the outside on a hot, humid day, the glass is too cold: use the wipers and turn the A/C a little warmer, as AAA suggests, so the glass isn't chilled below the outside air's dew point.

Why does running the A/C help when it's cold outside?

The air conditioner pulls moisture out of the air as it passes through, so the air reaching the windshield is dry. Your heater can still warm it. Consumer Reports and Jalopnik both say to keep the A/C on in winter for this reason.

Why do my windows fog up so easily even with the defroster on?

Usually there's extra water in the car or the system can't move enough air. Check for wet carpets or floor mats, a leaking door or window seal (Jalopnik says older cars with worn rubber seals let water in), and the cabin air filter: AAA lists windows that fog easily and are hard to defrost as a sign the filter is clogged. If the fog leaves a greasy film and you smell something sweet, the heater core may be leaking coolant.

How often should I change the cabin air filter?

AAA says factory intervals range from 15,000 to 30,000 miles, depending on the car and how it's driven; check your owner's manual for the exact number. Replace it sooner if airflow from the vents has dropped or the car smells musty.

How do I stop my windshield from fogging up in the first place?

Keep the inside of the glass clean: AAA recommends an ammonia-free glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth, and an anti-fog treatment if your windows fog often. Shake off snow and water before getting in, dry out wet floor mats, and Jalopnik suggests silica gel packets to soak up moisture. Start the drive with fresh air and the A/C on rather than recirculate.

Is it illegal to drive with a foggy windshield?

It can be. AAA notes that driving with fogged windows may be illegal in some states, and it's unsafe everywhere. Clear the glass before you pull out.
