What does code P0420 mean?

Get it checked soonUpdated 3 sources2 min read

Short answer

P0420 means "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)" — the engine computer has decided the catalytic converter on bank 1 isn't cleaning the exhaust as well as it should. The converter itself is often worn out, but an exhaust leak, a bad downstream oxygen sensor, or an engine problem that damaged the converter can set the same code.

Safety first. P0420 by itself is rarely an immediate safety risk, but if it shows up with a flashing check engine light or misfire codes (P0300 to P0308), stop and fix the misfire first. Driving with a misfire can overheat the converter.

How the car decides the converter is weak

Your catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front of it (upstream) and one behind it (downstream). The upstream sensor’s reading swings up and down constantly as the engine adjusts its fuel mix. A healthy converter stores and releases oxygen as it works, so the downstream sensor’s signal stays comparatively steady.

As a converter wears out, it stores less oxygen and the downstream signal starts to look like the upstream one. When the engine computer sees that during its self-test, it decides efficiency is “below threshold,” stores P0420, and turns on the check engine light.

Common causes, roughly in the order to check them

  1. Other codes first. Misfire, fuel-trim (running rich or lean), or oxygen sensor heater codes can explain P0420. Fix those before anything else.
  2. Exhaust leaks near the oxygen sensors let outside air in and skew the readings.
  3. A faulty downstream oxygen sensor or its wiring can report a good converter as bad.
  4. A worn or damaged catalytic converter. Converters age, and they’re also damaged by misfires, an engine that runs rich, or an engine burning oil or coolant.

Why “just replace the converter” can backfire

If an engine problem killed the old converter, a new one will fail the same way. A good diagnosis confirms the converter is really the problem and that whatever damaged it has been fixed. When you do replace it, make sure the replacement is legal for your vehicle and state; some states, including California, have stricter rules on aftermarket converters.

When to call a pro

P0420 diagnosis usually needs live sensor data and an exhaust leak check, which most DIYers can’t do with a basic code reader. If the code comes back after clearing it, or shows up with any misfire, get a professional diagnosis.

Common follow-up questions

What does "bank 1" mean?

Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder number 1. Four-cylinder engines usually have only one bank. V6 and V8 engines have two, and a matching problem on the other side sets P0430 (bank 2).

Can I keep driving with a P0420 code?

Usually yes in the short term, as long as there's no misfire and the car runs normally. But the car will typically fail an OBD-based emissions inspection, and if an engine problem is what's hurting the converter, it will keep getting worse.

Will a new oxygen sensor fix P0420?

Only if the downstream (rear) oxygen sensor is actually the faulty part. A healthy downstream sensor reporting a worn converter is doing its job, and replacing it won't clear the code for long. Have the sensor data checked before buying parts.

Is the catalytic converter covered under warranty?

Often, on newer vehicles. Federal emissions warranty rules require automakers to cover specified major emission control components, including the catalytic converter, for 8 years or 80,000 miles on most light-duty vehicles, and some states require longer coverage. Check your warranty booklet before paying for a converter.

Do fuel additives or "cat cleaners" fix P0420?

They don't repair a converter that's physically worn out or damaged. Diagnose the cause first.
