Why is my battery light on while driving?
Short answer
A battery light that comes on while the engine is running means the charging system isn't keeping up, most often because of a failing alternator, a loose or broken drive belt, or loose or corroded battery cables. The car is now running on what's left in the battery, so turn off everything you don't need and drive straight to a shop or pull over safely; it can stall without much warning.
Safety first. If the temperature gauge starts to climb, or the steering suddenly gets heavy, stop as soon as it's safe and call for a tow. On many engines the same belt that turns the alternator also drives the water pump, and driving with a broken belt can overheat and badly damage the engine. Don't open the hood near a hot engine with it running.

Step by step
- 1
Turn off everything you don't need
Switch off the air conditioning or heat, the stereo, heated seats and any phone chargers. The battery is now powering the car on its own, and every extra load shortens how far you can go.
- 2
Watch the temperature gauge
If the temperature climbs along with the battery light, the drive belt may have broken and taken the water pump with it. Pull over and stop the engine.
- 3
Drive straight to a shop, or pull over safely
Don't stop the engine until you get there unless you have to. A battery that isn't being recharged may not have enough left to restart the car, which means a jump or a tow.
- 4
Check the belt once the engine is off
Nissan's owner's manuals say to stop the engine and check the alternator belt. If it's loose, broken or missing, don't keep driving; the charging system needs repair.
- 5
Check the battery cables
Look for loose clamps and white or green crusty buildup on the terminals. Tighten and clean them with gloves and eye protection on. A bad connection alone can turn the light on.
- 6
Get the charging system tested
With a multimeter, a healthy alternator should show about 13.5 to 14.5 volts with the engine running. Lower than that points to the alternator, belt or wiring. Many parts stores and shops will test the battery and alternator for you.
What it means when the light comes on
The battery light (it may say BATT, ALT or CHG instead of showing a battery) comes on when you turn the ignition on and should go out once the engine starts. That’s the car checking the bulb. If it comes on, or stays on, while the engine is running, the charging system isn’t working the way it should.
Normally the alternator runs the car’s electrics and recharges the battery while you drive. When the light comes on, the battery is doing all the work by itself, and it will run down. How fast depends on how charged and healthy it was, and on how much you have switched on.
The usual causes
| Cause | Clues | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Failing alternator | Dimming headlights, flickering gauges, whining or grinding from the engine, hard starting | Test charging voltage; replace the alternator if it’s low |
| Loose, worn or broken drive belt | Squealing from under the hood; temperature gauge rising or heavy steering if it broke | Stop and check the belt; don’t drive on a broken one |
| Loose or corroded battery cables | White or green crust on terminals, light that flickers | Clean and tighten the terminals |
| Weak or old battery | Slow cranking, battery over about five years old | Test the battery |
| Blown fuse | Light comes on after electrical work, or fuses keep blowing | Check the fuse; if it blows again, see a shop |
| Voltage regulator or wiring fault | Light on with a good belt and battery | Shop diagnosis |

Why the belt matters
On many engines one belt, the serpentine belt, turns the alternator, the water pump, the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor. If that belt breaks, the battery light is only the first warning: the water pump stops moving coolant and the engine can overheat and be badly damaged. That’s why the temperature gauge is the thing to watch. If the gauge is rising, stop and call a tow rather than trying to make it to the shop. For what to do once it’s overheating, see My car is overheating. What should I do?
Reading the voltmeter
A multimeter on the battery terminals tells you most of what you need:
- Engine running, about 13.5 to 14.5 volts: the alternator is charging. If the light was on, look at connections, the battery and wiring.
- Engine running, about the same as engine off (around 12.6 volts or less): the alternator, belt or regulator isn’t charging.
- Engine off, below about 11.8 volts: Les Schwab calls that a dead battery that needs recharging or replacing.

When to see a pro
Get it to a shop the same day if the light stays on. Call a tow instead of driving if the belt is broken or missing, the engine is overheating, or the headlights and gauges are already dimming. A shop can test the battery, alternator and wiring together, which saves you from replacing a good battery when the alternator was the problem.
Common follow-up questions
How long can I drive with the battery light on?
Not long, and nobody can tell you exactly. RepairPal says it may be about half an hour or less, and less at night with the headlights on. Jalopnik puts it at roughly 30 minutes to an hour. It depends on how charged and healthy the battery was when the light came on. If the headlights start to dim, you're almost out of time.
Is the battery light about the battery or the alternator?
Usually the alternator side. The light watches the whole charging system, so it can come on for a failing alternator, a loose or broken belt, a bad voltage regulator, a blown fuse, damaged wiring, poor cable connections, or a weak battery. Jalopnik calls a bad alternator the most likely cause.
The battery light came on for a moment and went off. Should I worry?
It's normal for the light to come on with the ignition and go out once the engine starts. Les Schwab says that if it goes off after a few minutes or after a restart, there's likely nothing to worry about. If it keeps coming back, flickers, or stays on, get the battery and charging system tested.
Should I turn the car off when the battery light comes on?
Not until you're somewhere you can wait for help, unless the temperature gauge is climbing or you've lost the belt. A battery that isn't being recharged may not restart the car. If it's overheating, stop right away anyway.
Can I jump start a car with the battery light on?
Yes, but it may not run long. If the alternator isn't charging, a jump only gives the battery a little power to work with, and Les Schwab notes you could be stranded again soon after.
Can a bad battery turn on the battery light?
It can. A weak or failing battery, especially one over about five years old, is on Les Schwab's list of causes. Testing the battery and the alternator together tells you which one it is.
