Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on?
Short answer
Usually your regular brakes still work with the ABS light on, but the anti-lock system is switched off, so the wheels can lock and skid in a hard stop, especially on wet or icy roads. You can drive carefully to a shop, but don't put it off; if the red brake warning light is also on, stop driving and have the car checked.
Safety first. If the ABS light and the red brake light are on together, or the pedal feels soft or sinks, pull over when it is safe and have the car towed. With only the ABS light on, leave extra following distance and brake early, because the car may skid and lose steering in a panic stop.

Step by step
- 1
Check whether the red brake light is also on
ABS light alone means anti-lock braking is off. ABS plus the red brake light can mean low fluid or a brake force distribution fault, which is a stop-driving problem.
- 2
Check the brake fluid level
Low fluid can turn on the ABS light as well as the brake light. If it's below MIN, the pads may be worn or something is leaking; have it inspected.
- 3
Get the ABS codes read
The ABS module stores its own trouble codes. A shop, or a scan tool that supports ABS, can read them and point to the wheel speed sensor, wiring or module that failed.
- 4
Fix the cause, then clear the light
Clearing the light without fixing the fault only makes it come back. After brake work, some cars also need a scan-tool reset or a bleed to clear air from the system.
Common causes
| Cause | What’s going on | How serious |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel speed sensor | Dirty, corroded or failed sensor can’t report wheel speed; the most common cause | ABS off until fixed |
| Tone ring | Rusted or cracked toothed ring the sensor reads | ABS off until fixed |
| Wiring or connectors | Frayed or corroded wires, worse where roads are salted | ABS off until fixed |
| Low brake fluid | Worn pads or a leak; can also light the brake warning | Get it checked soon |
| ABS fuse or relay | Blown fuse; cheap fix, but a fuse that keeps blowing points to a bigger fault | ABS off until fixed |
| ABS module or pump | Internal failure of the control unit or hydraulic unit | Often the costly one |
| Recent brake work | Air in the lines or a reset needed with a scan tool | Have the shop recheck |

ABS light alone vs. with the brake light
With only the ABS light, the hydraulic brakes normally still work, and Mavis says you can usually drive carefully but should get the car inspected soon. Drive as if you’re on a car from before ABS: brake earlier, leave more room, and be gentle in rain, snow and on gravel.
With the red brake light on as well, it’s different. Mazda’s owner’s manual says that pair can mean the electronic brake force distribution has failed and tells owners to stop driving and have the car towed, because the rear wheels can lock sooner than normal. See Why is my brake warning light on? for the brake light by itself.
Diagnosing it
Skip guesswork and read the ABS codes first. They usually name the circuit or the wheel, which turns “ABS problem” into “left rear wheel speed sensor.” Before that, two free checks: the brake fluid level and the ABS fuse (your manual’s fuse chart shows which). Mechanic Base also describes testing a sensor with a meter, which is a reasonable DIY step once the code points at one wheel.
When to see a pro
If the codes point to the ABS module or pump, if the light came on right after brake work, or if the brake light is on too. Mavis notes that after brake work, trapped air or a needed scan-tool reset can keep the light on, so that’s a job for the shop that did the work.
Common follow-up questions
What happens to my brakes when the ABS light is on?
The basic brakes should still stop the car. What you lose is the anti-lock function that pulses the brakes to stop the wheels locking. In a hard stop the wheels can lock, stopping distances can grow, and you can lose steering control. Traction or stability control may switch off too.
What is the most common cause of an ABS light?
A faulty wheel speed sensor. Each wheel has one, and dirt, rust, a damaged tone ring or broken wiring can stop it reading wheel speed, which shuts off ABS and turns on the light.
Can low brake fluid turn on the ABS light?
Yes. Mavis and Mechanic Base both list low brake fluid as a cause, and it often goes with worn pads or a leak.
Can I read ABS codes myself?
Yes, with a scan tool that reads ABS codes for your car. Check that the tool lists ABS support before you buy it, or have a shop scan it.
Will the ABS light turn off by itself?
Sometimes, if the fault was momentary. Usually it stays on until the problem is fixed and the code is cleared. A scan tool can clear it, but Carista notes the light will likely come back if the underlying problem isn't resolved.
